Mental Wellbeing

“Joy; sometimes you just have to deliberately choose it, and when you do, it feeds your soul.”

Kim Ballantine

During the Covid-19 pandemic I became involved in initiatives to coach, support and bring awareness around the mental wellness issues frontline workers were facing such as stress, burnout, compassion fatigue, moral injury, and post-trauma growth. Living with a specialist physician gave me first-hand insight into the challenges and traumas faced. Out of this was born a passion for mental health and I had the privilege of being part of the Mental Wellness Initiative, established to collaboratively make mental wellness a policy and intervention priority for the public, private and civil society sectors.

South Africa is facing a mental wellness crisis with 66% of the population reporting worsened mental health during Covid-19, manifesting in fear and anxiety, depression, poor family relationships, suicide, and gender-based violence. None of us have been unaffected. The gift of the pandemic is that we are speaking about, and far more aware of, mental wellness issues.  I speak on the mental health challenges faced by frontline workers, the gift that has come out of COVID-19 and the opportunity for post-trauma growth.

I conduct CPD Accredited talks on the topics.

The Gift in the Covid-19 Storm: A Focus on Mental Wellness.

Compassion fatigue, stress and burnout were occupational hazards in the helping professions prior to COVID-19. However, the pandemic has brought additional issues such as moral injury, pre-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Burn-in to the fore, issues that both healthcare providers and their clients base will be facing. The gift in the COVID-19 storm has been an increased awareness of both mental health and the ethical issues surrounding it. This talk looks at each of these issues, their impact psychologically and physically and possible ethical implications.

  • Deliberate Joy, Spontaneous Happiness and the Kindness of Strangers!

Sometimes joy is a deliberate decision, especially during the third wave of this pandemic, as numbers climb and those numbers become names of people we know and love.

  • Emotions & COVID-19

The COVID-19 lockdown and its recent extension will be both physically and emotionally tough on many people. What this pandemic has done is to draw a line in the sand, which will create a pre- & post-COVID-19 distinction.

  • Thinking About COVID-19

With the whole world busy locking down and people having to work from home, there are many challenges facing managers, employees and family members alike.
